This photograph is taken at Ogori-shi Maizo Bunka Shiryo Center, where there is a pottery kiln that is a replica of kilns used during the Kofun Period (300-538 AD). The wood-fired kiln is heated to around 1300C over a period of around 50 hours.
This is the final stage of the firing process, when wet clay is thrown around the entire kiln, encasing it as the fire burns inside. This burns all of the remaining oxygen inside the kiln. The gases that spurt out of the kiln emit a powerful odor and make the scene look like a Hellish pit.
I am kneeling on the right side of the image. I think that we look like two people who've finally cornered a dragon and enclosed it behind us in a cave. 😏
