I think an up is being able to find communities in Japan of many foreigners and many types of restaurants to accommodate people. I think a down for me is the lack of jobs for only English speakers. I love Japan but having only the option of teaching English is sad for me.
I like life here, very safe and easygoing but working a full time job is ugh... I experienced burnout a few years ago and I still have a lot of work related anxiety 😭 honestly maybe this has nothing to do with Japan but still working here is very demanding but not so rewarding on a personal level
Be sure to always take a breather. It is a very hectic society but there are so many avenues to release your frustrations such as onsens. Try to find as many relaxations spots as you can.
Ups: I don’t feel fear here. Obviously there are crazy and untoward people out there but even at night, I don’t feel like anyone would trouble me.
Downs: It can be lonely here. I don’t have many friends - foreign or Japanese. The longer I’ve lived here, the more friends I’ve seen move on.

Downs: working. Ups: living.

Excellent health care system and a lot of benefits for children. High cost of living.
